Maintaining Developer Mental and Physical Health
We had three presentations relating to developer health.
Smoking Meat
First, Jim Bacon gave a remote presentation on smoking meats. He focused on the healthy aspects of smoking versus frying or other ways of preparing meats. He did point out that it was important to avoid sodium in any rubs applied to the meat (for those people affected by higher sodium). As an example, he pointed out that pork tenderloin, properly smoked, is healthier than chicken.
Living Forever: Ketogenic Diet and Stronglifts 5x5
Robert Stone gave a presentation on the health regimen that he has adopted. He advocates a ketogenic diet for reducing weight and a exercise program for improving strength. He reports that he feels better and has lost weight on this program.
Robert's presentation is available.
Social Group Interactions
Jocelyn Kirby gave a talk about some of the research into the interactions among social groups. She explained five levels of social interaction:
- Stranger
- Acquaintance
- Casual Friend
- Good Friend
- Best Friend
Afterward, she discussed some of the differences in interaction you might have with people at each level, pointing out the interactions are driven by different levels of trust or comfort. She then extended this model for work interactions:
- Stranger
- New Hire
- Co-worker
- Teammate
- Well oiled machine
Summary
